Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

1. Wuthering Heights  are the tales that Nelly tells.  Nelly talks about being a servant in a manor owned by Mr. Earnshaw. They adopt a boy named Heathcliff. Heathcliff and his sister Catherine grow very close. Hindley goes go to college and several years later Mr. Earnshaw dies. Hindley reutrns with his wife Frances gets everything that Mr. Earnshaw had. Frances dies in child birth and Hindley becomes increasingly mean to Hindley. Catherine gets engaged to Edgar even though she loves Heathcliff. Heathercliff runs away from Wuthering Heights then returns three years later, after Edgar and Catherine get married.. Heathcliff comes back wealthy and wants revenge on Hindley. Heathcliff lends Hindley money in order to get the manor when he dies. He also marries Isabella Linton to get Thrushcross Grange.Catherine becomes sick, gives birth to a daughter, and dies. Heathercliff begs her spirit not to leave him. Isabella runs awy to London and has Heathercliff's child, Linton. Linton comes to live with Heathercliff after 13 years and the death of his mother in London. Linton and Catherine's daughter fall in love.Linton doesnt really love her he is being foced my his father to marry her. they do get married and shortly after Edgar dies. Heathcliff gains control of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Linton dies and young Catherine is treated like a servant. After a long time Catherine grows to love Hareton as they live together at Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff becomes obsessed with the memory of Catherineand talks to her ghost. WhenHeathcliff dies, Hareton and young Catherine inherit Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Lockwood goes to visit the graves of Catherine and Heathcliff.
2. The theme of the novel would probably be love and the effect it has on people. Love and revenge was the motivation for the character actions.
3. Wuthering Heights has a grim tone. It is very eerie and dark. There is a lot of the death and heart break in this novel. Hendley feeling replaced my Heathcliff in his fathers heart. Catherine being in love with Heathcliff but not being able to be with him. Heathercliff being obsessed with Catherine's ghost. Only at the end do we see a little light of hope with young Catherine and Hareton.
4. When Heathcliff was the story the tone would get increasingly darker. Nelly's narration allow you to follow the story as though it was being told to you. For me,  this technique makes the story much more interesting. Bronte was a master at expressing her characters emotions. Heathcliff begging for Catherine's spirit to stay with him was an extremely powerful passage. Her tone was clearly shown through her characters and their actions. Heathcliff's revenge is a great example of this. The tone of the novel may have had the biggest effect. Bronte's use of tone make the story truely come to life. the way the tone changes with Heathcliff's presents allows the audience to get lost in the reading.

  1. Since this is the first post and I'm suppose add to the conversation I start one.

In the summary of the novel there are a couple spots where names are repeated or not clearly noted. Can someone give some sort of character map or explanation of the characters in the novel?

Rheingold talked about reviving topics. I guess that is kind of what I'm doing here.

  2. You should include the passages that stood out to you in order for your readers to relate or share their own interpretation.

  3. Why do you think that when Heathcliff told the story the tone became darker?

  4. I'm a little confused about how ''love and revenge'' coincided.
