Literature Analysis

Of Mice and Men

1) This story  is about two men, George Milton and Lennie Small, that wonder around looking for work during the Great Depression. George is a smart man, who wants a better life. Lennie is his special cousin. He is like a small child mentally. The two find their way to a ranch near Soledad. There, they meet a man named Curley. He is the son of the ranch owner, and he doesn’t feel confident Shortly after their heated encounter with Curley, they meet Candy, the old worker who offers money for George’s ranch. Curly's  wife messes with Lennie. Unfortunately Lennie gives her a hug  but doesn’t realize he is hugging to hard which breaks her neck. Curly forms a mob in a hunt for Lennie. George knows that Lennie would never hurt anything intentionally. So George kills Lennie before the mob gets him.

2)Things don’t always work out the way you want them to. No matter what you do plans don’t always work out. The title says it all. It’s important to keep trying and have a dream.

3)Steinbeck's tone in the book is serious. He was able to make you care for the characters. I really wanted Lennie to be okay. Making you want the two men to successed. The reason they left their hometown was because Lennie touched a woman's  dress  and they were ran out of town. Lennie is a nice character, but everbody except George thinks Lennie is a dangerous mental ill person. The older woker, Candy, had a dog that he had raised and used on the farm since he was a puppy.  The dog gets to old and Candy has to put it down. It burdens Candy when he doesn’t put down his own dog. In the end, George wants to be the one who ends Lennie not a strange who would do it in anger.

4)George's description of his clothing is the only real direct description.  You gain a better sense of the characters through their actions and dialogue. George has goals for himself but you can tell he cares for Lennie. He wants Lennie to be happy. George reads Lennie the his favorite story when asked.  Steinbeck does a great job in making the readers care about the character. You care for the George and Lennie  and hope they will be okay.
